Margate Civic Society:
(includes Birchington, Cliftonville and Westgate)
The Margate Civic Society was founded in 1968. It is a registered charity. The society’s purpose and aim is to encourage high standards of architecture and town planning in Margate and its environs. It works to stimulate public interest and care for the history and character of the area and to encourage the preservation, development and improvement of features of general amenity and historical interest.
Town Pride awards are given annually to those buildings which have been refirbished, cleaned or modified to enhance the appearance of the town. New, high quality buildings are also eligible for the award. The society monitors and reacts to local planning applications.
Evening meetings are held monthly between October and May at the Walpole Bay Hotel, Fifth Avenue, Cl;iftonville. The talks, usually illustrated, explore aspects of the locality in interesting and varied ways. Some afternoon meetings are also held. A newsletter is published four times a year.
To enquire about membership (only £5 a year) contact the Membership Secretary on 01843 221838.
The society sponsors walks in Margate’s Old Town (see ‘Walking Opportunities’).
